Caren Lyn Tackett returns to The Cutting Room June 9 for some Rock and Soul!

Caren’s passion for singing/songwriting stems from her roots. She was born into a family of jazz and big band musicians dating back to her Great Grandparents’ 1917 formation of The Manuel’s Black and White Orchestra, one of America’s first and longest running interracial dance bands of it’s time. MB&W shared the bill with some heavy hitters, such as the Dorsey Brothers, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and many more, and continued through many generations. Caren’s father, Charlie, gave Caren her singing debut at age 7 when he brought her along to a gig. She was hooked.

Caren dropped out of Emerson College at age 18 to play ‘Eponine’ in the National Tour of the Broadway musical “Les Miserables”. This jump-started her long running theatrical career, and she has spent much of her life since then starring in Broadway and World Touring musical productions such as “Hair”, “Rent”, “High Fidelity”, “Evita”, “Grease” & “Fame”. Whether in NYC or on the road, Caren continued writing music & theatrical pieces and has gigged in a wide variety of places; from The Sage Club in Berlin to The Key Club in Los Angeles; from random clubs in Austria and Amsterdam, to the old and new Cutting Room in NYC.

Caren lived in L.A. for a few years, writing and recording many of her best originals with some heavily talented writers, musicians and producers such as Thai Long Ly, Spencer Stander, the late great Rory Bennett (K-Ci and Jo-Jo), Al McKay (Earth, Wind & Fire), Jason Scheff (Chicago) and numerous others. After an uninspired production deal went nowhere and a few courting labels gave up trying to pigeonhole her sound, Caren returned to the world of theater, working on Broadway while writing and performing her own material in local clubs. She also dabbled in voice over acting, originating the voices of Stella & Darcy in the first four seasons of “Winx Club”, as well as episodes of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, “Pokemon Chronicles”, etc.

In July 2012, Caren, along with Royal Family Productions & Shawn Cody, co-produced the world premiere of her own musical, “Born Blue - an existential rock and soul experience”, right here at the Cutting Room! Blue’s director, Anthony Rapp, along with a stellar creative team and sickly talented cast, created an electrifying musical experience resulting in nightly sold out crowds, waiting lists and standing ovations.

Currently, Caren has moved her beautiful family out West to Colorado, where she is finishing writing music for her next project - “Slide”, an indie musical feature film about the misdiagnosis, mistreatment and misplacement of the mentally ill in our society. She’s also in the talking stages of housing “Born Blue” at an incredible venue (to be announced at a later date) in Colorado this winter.

With killer special guests Katie Kiyan, Elise Levin, Nate Gray and Brett Benowitz, along with a tight band including Paul Gil on bass and Wayne Dunton on drums, this night at TCR is all about Caren letting loose in a way she hasn’t in years, in a funky and warm atmosphere, embedded in original tunes from today and yesterday....with maybe a few covers.

So.... sure. June 9th is the Tony’s. So....set your DVR and watch that s%&t later. Come out and get real, deep and down with Caren Lyn Tackett and her tribe of music makers at The Cutting Room!
