Joey Berkley's Bandits
"Joey Berkley’s Bandits released their self-titled album in May of 2016. The new record breathes jazz sophistication into R&B, funk, rock, and pop, "stealing" from a wide array of musical genres. Embracing the famous Ellington quote, “there are only two types of
music, good and the other kind,” as the record’s theme, all the original songs feature inventive writing, great solos, and ensemble precision. Most of all, the band features musicianship at the highest level. The challenging Bandits music showcases the talents of
many top-notch musicians, successful on the NYC
"Influenced by Coltrane, Miles, and Monk, Berkley has used these roots to shape his own contemporary "sound" as a Tenor Saxophonist, composer, and recording artist. He has founded/led various bands, including the Joey Berkley Quartet, Funkasaurus Rex, and Westchester Jazz Orchestra (WJO). Coming off
the stage and into the classroom, Berkley is also a well-respected educator. Currently, he serves as music director at the Westchester Center for Jazz and Contemporary Music, offering a curriculum based on almost 40 years of experience as a professional musician. Whether sharing his knowledge with a student,
recording his music, or frequenting the club and concert circuit with his various groups, Joey’s talent has warranted fabulous reviews from The Jazz Times to The New York Times.
